James Redford underwent successful liver transplant surgery in 1993 and
is now restored to full health. Following his surgery, James launched The
James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness (JRI), a nonprofit organization
devoted to educating the public about the critical need for organ donation.
The programs of JRI include producing and distributing films to deliver appropriate
information about the issues of organ transplantation as part of an on-going
public awareness and education campaign.
Someone is added to the national organ transplant waiting list every 18 minutes
and 10 people die every day waiting for an organ transplant. Film has the
power to reach millions and influence the decisions of those family members
who must make this decision for those who can no longer speak for themselves.
It is our hope that by focusing on the human and emotional side of transplantation,
we will encourage people to become organ donors.
JRI has just completed a 16-minute drama, Flow, which is targeted to the teen
audience. We will be distributing Flow with a completed education package
to driver's education classes, local high schools and community-based youth
programs. It is our hope to motivate students to make an informed decision
to be organ and tissue donors and, most importantly, to discuss their decision
with their families. A $5 contribution can make a big difference in our effort
to educate our youth by distributing Flow to high schools across the country.
